    NOTES:
  • Irish locations are in Castlerahan parish, County Cavan unless otherwise stated.
  • Three lines have contributed to this research, while the other lines are known to us only through public records. Contributors: descendants of immigrant brothers Matthew and Edward Fagan, and descendants of their uncle, Matthew Caffrey. Anna Fenton also had extensive material on one descendant line of Laurence Fagan: the Santoros. The Santoro line appears to have died off.
  • All Irish information was provided by James Caffrey, with whom I connected in the spring of 2000. He has sent much material which is yet to be digested and posted.
    • Irish birth dates for John and James CAFFREY and for Rose, John, Eugene, Edward (x2) and Laurence FAGAN are from a database of extracts from baptismal records in Castlerahan parish registers. In fact, judging by a transcript taken from the original source in 1914, I strongly suspect that these dates are simply baptismal dates, and that actual birth dates are unknown.
    • Other early Irish dates are from a transcript of the 1821 census for Castlerahan, held at Cavan Co. Library. In it the Caffrey family was listed as Gaffney.
  • My ggf Matthew Fagan's dates are based on his death record, census and private information. His birth is undocumented and his birth date was never reported the same twice. Baptismal records no longer survive for the span during which Matthew and possibly two of his sisters Mary and Ann were born.
  • Our only private source for the names of Matthew's other Irish-born siblings was a handwritten list passed on by Anna Fenton. Of the names on the list, only Matthew, Mary and Ann are unconfirmed by public baptismal records. Matthew's brother Eugene appeared on Anna's list as "Owen." His children's baptismal records have confirmed that Eugene and Owen Fagan are one and the same person. Per James Caffrey, Owen is a common familiar name for Eugene.
  • Matthew's brother Edward Fagan's dates are based on his baptismal transcript from Castlerahan registers, Civil War pension file, Naturalization papers, church marriage certificate, Bridgeport death certificate, the 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 census, obituaries and Bridgeport City Directories.
  • Laurence Fagan's dates are based on his baptismal transcript, his death certificate, the 1870 and 1880 censuses and a 1877 certificate for his second marriage.
  • Eugene Fagan's dates are based on his Castlerahan baptismal transcript and the baptismal transcripts for all his children (St. Stephen's, E. 28th St, Manhattan), the 1870, 1880, 1892, 1900 and 1920 censuses, various death certificates, interment lists, wills, his gravestone at Calvary Cemetery and his naturalization papers.
  • John Fagan and family's dates are based on his baptismal and cemetery record, censuses of 1870, 1892, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. I have found New York City death records for John, his wife, five of their offspring and some grandchildren.
  • Mary (Fagan) Eason's dates are based on 1855 , 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses in Manhattan and 1900 in Norwalk CT. Also various birth and death records for her offspring and husband in Manhattan and her own death certificate in Norwalk, CT.
  • The only source to name Margaret EGAN's parents was Margaret's death certificate. Other EGANS - potential brothers - were baptismal sponsors of her children. Because they all had common names, I have not been able to trace any member of the Egan family.
  • None of the four daughters of immigrant brothers Edward and Matthew had children, while all three sons did. All known third-generation descendants of these two lines were surnamed FAGAN.
  • Naming conventions.
    • In each of the four families we have followed, the oldest son was named Edward, after his paternal grandfather. We have records of of three of these Edwards from birth to death, and I lost track of one: Laurence's son.
    • Each of the immigrating families also had a daughter named Mary, named after paternal grandmother. The two Marys I have have followed (daus. Edward and Matthew) were both known as Mamie.
    • In a departure from the form, Laurence's and Eugene's first known daughters were named Catherine. Laurence's daughter was named after his first wife. Eugene's was named after his wife's mother, Catherine McGaughran.
