Ancestors and descendants of Seth HANDY of Lee, Berkshire, Mass. Hogan Overview | Tree 1 | Tree 2 | Tree 3 | Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | DESCENDANCY CHART -- Seth Handy of Lee, Massachusetts -- D R A F T May 2011 This chart was compiled by a descendant of this HANDY line: English immigrant Richard HANDY & Hannah UNKNOWN -> Isaac HANDY & Eleanor STEWART -> Joseph HANDY & Lois HATCH -> Seth HANDY & Susannah RUSSELL -> Henry W. D. HANDY & Mary Ann MORGAN -> Mary Ann (HANDY) HOGAN It represents new research on Seth HANDY who migrated from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Berkshire County, four children by his first wife: Barney C. HANDY (aka Barna Coe), Joseph HANDY, Sarah Ann (HANDY) YOUNG and Hannah Parker (HANDY) BARRINGER, and the two children of his second wife: Henry W. D. HANDY and Fanny Fowler (HANDY) BUCK. I have done no personal research on Seth HANDY's ancestors or siblings, but I am including the bare-bones tree for context. To my limited knowledge, the only offspring of Seth Handy whose lines did not die out are these two: Joseph Handy, who left Lee, Mass for to neighboring Columbia County, New York during the 1830s, and Henry W. D. Handy, my great(2) grandfather, who appeared in Brooklyn, New York around 1850. Seth's son, Barney, also had step grandchildren, and that line has probably survived. An overview of Seth Handy's lost or truncated offspring lines: George Franklin HANDY and Charles Backus HANDY disappeared from the early Berkshire County records. These two boys might have relocated, but neither has been obvious in census. Their father was not enumerated in the 1820 census, so we are without a family nose count for the 1810-1830 stretch. I have come across an online family tree proposing that a Charles HANDY born in Massachusetts and relocated to Kansas, was the son of Seth and Hannah, but to date I've found no compelling evidence for this link. The MA > KS Charles HANDY did indeed have a family, and probably living descendants. Hannah Parker (HANDY) BARRINGER was widowed early and had a daughter, Mary Grenelle BARRINGER. Mary became a career teacher but did not marry. Census listings and wills suggest that Sarah Ann (HANDY) YOUNG and Barney C. HANDY, who both married, had no direct descendants. Their wills name only niece, nephew or adopted survivors. Fanny (HANDY) BUCK, with her mother, Susannah (RUSSELL) HANDY, husband and three small children, moved to western New York State during the mid 1860s, settling in Livonia, New York, where they lived and died. One son moved to Illinois and never married. The daughter and the other son married but both lost their only children in infancy. In 1848, Barney C. HANDY married Mary (DAME) HOPKINS, born in Portsmouth, NH. Her background: married to William HOPKINS in Springfield, MA in 1832, widowed in 1843. Mary brought a step-son into Barney's life: Henry S. HOPKINS, born 1834 in Mass and died 1902 in St. Louis, leaving children and grandchildren. Two descendant surnames: ARCHAMBAULT and KAHMANN. Henry was executor of his stepfather's estate. In the 1855 and 1860 censuses, Barney and his wife's household also included a girl born circa 1844 and identified as Hellen A. HANDY. Born during Mary's widowed interval, she was not the correct age for a daughter of either husband, and the fact that this girl was not in the family's 1850 census listing suggests an adoptive relationship. Barney Handy's obituary confirms that he was survived by an adopted daughter residing in California, but gave no name. Yet the official transcript of his will in the Berkshire County libers includes a misleading error. It makes no mention of a stepdaughter, instead naming among his heirs a "half-sister" named "Hellen A. MCCLELLAN," and omitting Barney's only real half sister, Fanny HANDY BUCK of Livonia, NY. The will is clearly incorrect. I suspect that the two names were concatenated during transcript of the will, and one of the heirs (probably Fanny) might have been left out in the administration of the estate. Helen A. HANDY's life in a nutshell: she trained in Massachusetts as a teacher, teaching English and French at Wesleyan Academy in Wilbraham, Mass during her twenties (1865). By her mid thirties she had relocated to California, taking up a teaching post at Mills Seminary in Oakland by 1880 and later at the Irving Institute in San Francisco. During her forties she married widowed businessman Robert MCLELLAN, and after his death, married John COOP, another widowed businessman. To my knowledge, Helen had no children of her own, but she had step children from both marriages. She was also active in the bay area in local book clubs.
