Ancestors and descendants of Nathaniel Patten RUSSEL of Tyringham, Berkshire, Mass. Hogan Overview | Tree 1 | Tree 2 | Tree 3 | Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | DESCENDANCY CHART -- Nathaniel Patten RUSSELL of Tyringham, MA -- D R A F T Aug 2009 This chart represents new research on the descendants of Nathaniel Patten Russell of Tyringham, Berkshire Co., Mass. For context, I've included Nathaniel's parents and siblings in the tree, but my research on Nathaniel's ancestry has been minimal and I am aware of several conflicts I can't resolve. His parents were John Russell, Jr. and Elizabeth Colburn. Elsewhere, I have seen John's male line given as John Russell(4), Benjamin Russell(3), William Russell(2), John (or Joseph) Russell(1), but I have not gone down that road myself. Nathaniel's father's story is problematic. Several posted genealogies give John Russell, Jr. the following dates: born abt 1718 in Lexington, Mass. and died August 25, 1756 in Brimfield, Mass. In fact, Nathaniel Patten Russell's father's estate was settled in Tyringham, Mass in 1804, nearly 50 years after his supposed death in Brimfield. The John Russell mentioned in the Brimfield death records seems to be an erroneous connection; perhaps his Lexington birth is also a suspect. Our John Russell, whose will states his paternal relationship to his son Nathaniel, was actively engaged in Tyringham land exchanges between 1771 and 1799. He also left bequests to his widow Elizabeth, and to the following people, whose relationships are not stated in the will, but most of whom have been said to be offspring of John Russell, Jr.: Ephraim Russell, Olive Holton, Elisabeth Russell, Rebeckah (wife of Luke Dean) and Hannah (wife of Elijah Herrick). There is also a bequest to a Molly Russell, a woman I can't identify, but is probably a daughter. Returning to Nathaniel: the vital records of Killingly township, Windham County, Connecticut list his birth as Sept. 21, 1741. His was the earliest of John and Elizabeth's births to appear in the records, but some posted family trees have included several undated siblings. I've included these names in my tree with wide date ranges, but I can't vouch for their sources. On Jan 21, 1768, Nathaniel married his first wife, Susannah Carroll in the Congregation Church of Thompson, Windom County, CT. Susannah evidently died, but where or when we don't know. There were no children recorded, but this doesn't rule them out. A couple years after this marriage, a contingent of Russells left Connecticut for Tyringham, Mass. The only certain members of this group were Nathaniel and his parents, but there may have been others. I suspect most of Nathaniel's siblings did not move with them, but it's possible that some if the younger girls were part of this migration. As heads of household, only John, Nathaniel and a Jacob Russell show up in the early Federal censuses. An aside about Jacob Russell of Tyringham: we know nothing about this Jacob's roots, but born circa 1769, a year after Nathaniel Patten Russell's first marriage, he is well placed logistically as offspring of Nathaniel. Jacob married a woman named Abigail and had at least one son in Tyringham before moving to Dalton, Berkshire, Mass between 1800 and 1810. Jacob's death was listed as Sept. 7, 1828 in Dalton's vital records, his place of birth and the names of his parents not revealed. In short, while the dates and circumstances suggest a father-son relationship between Jacob and Nathaniel, we lack proof. I have left him off the chart below. In 1771, Nathaniel and his father purchased the first of a few large plots of land in Tyringham and farmed that land until their deaths. Nathaniel served in the revolutionary war and married his second wife, Elizabeth Culver, around 1785, probably in Tyringham. Elizabeth Culver was also a Connecticut girl, probably born in Woodbury, Litchfield County around 1758. She was nearly 20 years his junior. The identities of Elizabeth's parents were provided by a 1793 Tyringham deed: Hezekiah Culver (b. 1732, d. c1792) and Ann Way (b. c1737, d. after 1793). Like Nathaniel and his parents, the Culvers were Connecticut > Tyringham transplants. Tyringham records list seven births for Nathaniel and Elizabeth, the earliest being my great(3) grandmother Susannah (Russell) Handy in 1787, and the last a son Nathaniel, Junior born in 1803. All the Russell children grew to maturity, married and left Massachusetts after Nathaniel Patten Russell's death (which was unrecorded, but I believe ca. 1816-17). Five children and the widowed Elizabeth moved to the "Connecticut Western Reserve" (aka New Connecticut), a settlement in northeastern Ohio of New England pioneers. The Ohio migrations took place between 1818 and 1826 to Ashtabula, Portage and Lorain counties. [About the Connecticut Western Reserve] Somewhat later, Nathaniel's two remaining children moved to New York State. By the mid-1860s, I believe all of Nathaniel and Elizabeth's direct descendants had left Massachusetts. Most of the first generation were farmers or married to farmers. One was a blacksmith. I believe all had children, though my inventory for each family is limited. Most had grandchildren. It is certain that Nathaniel and Elizabeth Russell have a great number of living descendants, but I only have personal knowledge of my own line and have corresponded with descendants of two lines: John Russell and Nathaniel Russell, Jr. MORE DETAIL Elizabeth Russell (Mrs. Ebenezer Heath) and her oldest brother John Russell (who married Ebenezer's sister Dorcas Heath) left the earliest -- around 1819, settling in Ashtabula County, Ohio, part of the Western Reserve. I suspect sister Anna Russell accompanied them but I have no confirmation. Anna married Daniel Rose in Ashtabula Co. on Jan 10, 1822. Also during the late teens, still in Massachusetts, daughter Electa Russell married Asa Wadsworth. They had two sons in Tyringham before migrating in 1823 to Portage County, Ohio, also part of the Western reserve. Asa's widowed father Enos also migrated to Freedom, where father and son bought adjoining lots in a wooded area. During the 1830s the growing Wadsworth family moved to Wellington, Lorain County, Ohio. Their early adventures are mentioned in a History of Portage County and an 1890s biographical sketch of Electa's son Horace. There are chronological conflicts between these two sources, but it is clear that the family lived a pioneer existance in Ohio. Nathaniel's widow also joined the Ohio migrants. Though I am not sure when, or with whom Elizabeth lived, the 1820 census nose counts suggest that she lived and traveled with the Wadsworths, in other words, with the 1823 westward migration. In 1838 she was buried in Williamsfield Cemetery, Ashtabula Co. at around the age of 80. The location suggests that she lived with son John, daughter Anna Rose or Elizabeth Heath, but I never found a female her age in the 1830 census living with any of her children. Nathaniel Jr., had a more circuitous migration, traveling first to Ohio with his mother and siblings, but heading back east by the mid 1820s, settling and starting a family in Genesee County, New York. In 1839 he headed west again, settling for the rest of his life in Illinois. This History of Champaign County includes a [couple paragraphs about Nathaniel] and a [more extended sketch and photo of his son Henry M.] An aside: the IGI includes many member-submitted birth records for Nathaniel Jr. and his first wife Hannah GERE, listing various erroneous places of birth. [Biographical sketches] of Hannah's brothers claim Vermont births. I suspect she was also born there, but not strongly enough to remove the question mark from my own tree. Whiting Russell was the last of the Russells to leave Tyringham. In 1818, after Nathaniel's death, and prior to the Ohio exodus, his mother signed over her Tyringham land to Whiting. During the late 1830s, in his early middle age, Whiting sold the Russell family land and migrated with his wife and father-in-law to Newark Valley, Tioga County, in southwestern New York State. Whiting lived to be 87 years old. I suspect Whiting and his wife Martha Park had or adopted children, but it's not clear how many and when. They had no births recorded in the Tyringham records. Nathaniel's oldest daughter, Susannah Russell, was the last to marry and the last Russell to leave New England. In 1826, at age 39, she married a man from Lee, the town adjoining Tyringham. Her husband Seth Handy was a widower twenty years her senior and with several children. They had a long marriage and at least two children of their own: Fanny Handy Buck and Henry W. D. Handy, both born in Lee. Seth Handy died in 1853. During the 1860s, Susannah Russell Handy left Lee, Mass with her married daughter's family for a new life in western New York State, eventually settling in So. Livonia, Livingston County. Her son Henry Handy departed by 1850 and started a family -- our family -- in Brooklyn, New York. Susannah Russell and Seth Handy were of healthy stock: he died at 85 and she at 100. Their children died at 85 and 83. John RUSSELL Jr, b. ca. 1718?
